Secretary of State Handel Elected NASS Vice-President for Southern Region Atlanta – Georgia Secretary of State Karen Handel was unanimously elected this week as the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) Vice-President for the Southern U.S. Region. As Vice-President for the Southern Region, Handel will represent 14 states and Washington, D.C. on the NASS Executive Committee and promote the association’s activities throughout the regions, including its initiatives on election administration, business services, securities, international relations and state archives. The Southern Region includes Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Washington D.C. “I am honored that my colleagues elected me to represent the Southern Region,” Secretary Handel said. “I look forward to working with the region’s Secretaries of State and state and federal elected officials to promote transparency in government and create responsible, ethical public policy.” Secretary Handel currently serves on five NASS committees, including Securities, State Heritage, Business Services, the Company Formation Task Force and as Co-chair of the Committee on Voter Participation. Founded in 1904, the National Association of Secretaries of State (NASS) is the nation's oldest nonpartisan, professional organization for public officials. The association serves as a medium for the exchange of information and fosters cooperation between states governments in the development of public policy. NASS has key initiatives in the areas of elections and voting, state business services, electronic government and digital archiving. Karen Handel was sworn in as Georgia Secretary of State in January 2007. The Secretary of State’s office offers important services to our citizens and our business community. Among the office’s wide-ranging responsibilities, the Secretary of State is charged with conducting efficient and secure elections, the registration of corporations, and the regulation of securities and professional license holders. The office also oversees the Georgia Archives and the Capitol Museum. |
