Actions Taken by the Georgia State Board of Funeral Service at its January 8 Meeting

Macon, Ga.—The Georgia State Board of Funeral Service held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 8.

The Board approved the following orders to accept fine monies for inspection violations and settling cases:

  • Thornton’s Funeral Home, Hazlehurst: Inspection citation of $100 for failure to maintain the required minimum inventory of eight adult caskets. The inventory was deficient by one casket.
  • Ponders Funeral Home Inc. & Cremation, Dalton: Inspection citation of $800 for failure to maintain the required minimum inventory of eight adult caskets. No caskets were in the inventory.
  • Alvie Coes Funeral Home, Unadilla: Inspection citation totaling $100 for two incidents of failure to maintain in inventory the required 24 bottles of arterial fluid and 24 bottles of cavity fluid in the embalming room.
  • Peoples Funeral Home, Abbeville: Inspection citation of $100 issued which included $50.00 for failure to maintain in inventory the required 24 bottles of arterial fluid and 24 bottles of cavity fluid in the embalming room, and $50 for failure to display current licenses for the establishment, embalmer, funeral director, or any apprentices licensed with the establishment.
  • Walker Funeral Home, Carrollton: Inspection citation of $200 issued for failure to keep all tables and instruments in the embalming room in a sanitary and clean condition.
  • Nance & Sons Mortuary, Inc., Cordele: Inspection citation of $350 which includes a $50 fine for failure to display current licenses for the establishment, embalmer, funeral director, or any apprentices licensed with the establishment; and a $300 fine for failure to maintain the required minimum inventory of eight adult caskets. The inventory was deficient by three caskets.

The Board accepted the following Public Consent Order:

  • David L. Campbell, Savannah: The Consent Order places both the licensee’s embalmer and funeral director licenses on probation for 12 months for signing apprenticeship reports as the supervising embalmer and funeral director, when he was not the approved supervisor. The consent order also imposes a $100 fine.

In other action, the Board voted to establish a policy that pending applications are valid for 12 months from the date received in the Board office. Any application that is incomplete after the 12-month period will be administratively withdrawn. An applicant whose application has been withdrawn will be required to submit a new application with fees to be considered for licensure by the Board.

The next meeting of the Georgia State Board of Funeral Service is scheduled for February 12, 2008, at 10:00 a.m. at the Professional Licensing Boards in Macon.
