Voting in a Primary: Important Information

Q: What ballot choices do I have during a General Primary?

A: Georgia does not register voters by political party. In a General Primary election, voters must choose which ballot they want to cast (either Republican or Democratic). There is not a Libertarian Party primary ballot, as those candidates are chosen by the party during its statewide convention. Additionally, qualified independent candidates are not selected in a primary election, but will appear on the General Election ballot in November.

In the event of a General Primary Run-off, voters must choose the same party ballot (either Republican or Democratic) as the one they chose during the General Primary. If an individual did not vote in the General Primary, then that voter may choose either party’s ballot for the Run-off.

Voters will be able to vote for all qualified and nominated candidates during the General Election.
